From the outset, children are affected by family habits and the home environment. The amount of physical activity by children starts to decline from the age of 7.

Childhood obesity and excess weight are significant health issues for individual children, their families, and public health. It can have serious implications for the physical and mental health of a child, which can then follow on into adulthood. The numbers of children who continue to have an unhealthy, and a potentially dangerous weight, is a national public health concern. More than 1 in 3 year 6 pupils were measured to be obese or overweight according to a March 2017 report by the NHS; with a British Heart Foundation report also finding only 20% of 2-12 year olds were meeting their recommended activity levels.
